Our Story
The power of books in becoming
It all started in 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic: Feeling isolated and alone during lockdown, I started MS Masterminds, combining a passion for reading with a longing for human connection. But what started as a book club with just 20 members grew to a global community of 700+.
In three years, we read 10 books together, beginning with Shawn Anchor’s The Happiness Advantage. From there, I selected books following the interests of the community, ultimately culminating in an MS Masterminds Alaska cruise in 2022 with the author of The Most Powerful You, Kathy Caprino.
Marked by community and connection, the cruise was a reminder that MS Masterminds was never about the books alone. It was about us, the people reading them. And in being vulnerable, sharing our experiences within the community, and learning from each other, we all accelerated our growth.
But, after the cruise, my career changed, and so too did MS Masterminds: I was headhunted into an executive coaching role with the digital sports company, Fanatics, and, with the transition, pressed pause on MS Masterminds—until a journey to Vietnam in 2025 sparked the revival of this community.
I was in Ho Chi Minh City with my daughter, where a friend told me we could find Book Street, a street crowded with book shops, stalls, and, of course, books. As we strolled Book Street, snapping photos, a cover caught my eye: Think Like a Monk by Jay Shetty.
It a street crowded by book covers with Vietnamese characters, Think Like a Monk was the first title I saw in English. I didn’t know it then, but finding that book was meant to be. I started and finished it in Asia, returning home to Vancouver, Canada, where I happened to meet Shetty at an event.
The book was life-changing: Reflecting on his experiences as a monk, Shetty shares his wisdom on living with purpose. In doing so, he inspired me to leave Corporate America, start my own coaching business, and step into the role of CEO for a non-profit, and live my purpose—all in a matter of months.
This is the power of books. They have the power to change us, our careers, our lives. To become a version of ourselves we haven’t realized yet. This was my experience, and it’s my hope for you, too. Join MS Masterminds, and let’s expand your sense of self and accelerate your growth, together.
